2 Louisiana men jailed on drug charges after traffic stop

A drug offense charge in Louisiana must be taken seriously. Potential penalties may include time behind bars and hefty fines. Further, a conviction will have lasting impacts on a person's life for years to come. It could prevent someone from getting hired for a good job or even renting an apartment. Because the stakes are high, it is important that anyone charged with a drug offense contact an experienced defense attorney to protect his or her rights.

On Jan. 25 at approximately 8:00 in the morning, a Combined Anti-Drug Task Force (C.A.T.) detective stopped a car that was headed eastbound on Interstate 10 near mile marker 10 in Calcasieu Parish for a traffic violation. According to authorities, the driver of the car, a 36-year-old man from Paulina, and the passenger, a 46-year-old Baton Rouge man, were acting suspiciously.

After requesting permission to search the vehicle, the detective apparently uncovered roughly two ounces of crystal meth in the car, as well as a meth pipe in the passenger's clothing. Authorities estimate the drugs had a street value of $5,500.

Both the driver and passenger were charged with possession of methamphetamine and locked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. In addition, the passenger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $15,000 for the driver and $16,000 for the passenger.

When the police stop a vehicle, they must follow certain protocol. In a case such as this one, a defense attorney will examine all aspects of the traffic stop to ensure law enforcement officials did not violate the constitutional rights of the accused. If an officer deviated from protocol, that information can be used to the defense's advantage.
