There is no such thing as a small drug crime. Any drug offense charge has the potential to seriously impact someone’s life, resulting in long-term ramifications. In addition to legal penalties, conviction can make it difficult to get hired for a good job, rent an apartment or even obtain a loan. That is why any Louisiana drug charge must be aggressively fought.
A couple from Opelousas knows this all too well. A 40-year-old man and his 47-year-old wife have recently been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Because they are facing severe penalties, it is important that they combat the charges against them.
Opelousas police apparently received various tips that the couple owned and allegedly sold marijuana. Following up on the tips, police officers began to watch the couple’s residence. After gathering enough evidence for a search warrant, officers approached the home.
As the man was leaving the house, officers conducted a traffic stop on his van. According to the police, officers discovered eight large bags filled with marijuana in the vehicle. The police claimed the man admitted the bags in the van were packaged and ready to be sold.
While the traffic stop was being conducted, other officers were searching the residence. Police apparently found numerous bags of marijuana in the couple’s bedroom. They also reportedly discovered nearly $500 in cash hidden under the mattress. Police say they believe this money came from drug sales.
People of all walks of life are charged with various drug crimes each day. Whether someone is charged with possession, trafficking, manufacturing or distribution of controlled substances, that person has the right to defend himself or herself.
