Lafayette man charged with possession of child pornography

On Wednesday, a 26-year-old Lafayette man confessed to police that he downloaded over 100 child pornography videos onto his computer over the last year.

In the affidavit supporting the man's warrant for arrest, the Lafayette Police Department said the man had downloaded the videos after searching the internet for explicit material using the term "13 year old."

Multiple videos of child pornography were found on the man's laptop after the Lafayette Police Department conducted a June 15 undercover operation by the LPD cyber crime unit. That unit is responsible for tracking down individuals who possess, manufacture, or distribute child pornography. The unit was able, prior to the arrest, to preview the man's computer using forensic evidence.

After his arrest, the man reported confessed that he had downloaded over 100 child pornography videos using "peer to peer" software. He admitted that he had been involved in the activity for around a year. He also said that he had searched for videos for children of around six years of age.

Sources said the man was arrested and has been charged with one felony charge of pornography involving juveniles.

Child pornography is a challenging crime to be charged with. Not only do defendants face determined prosecutors and sympathetic juries to wage a defense, child pornography charges also bring severe penalties for those who are convicted. If the images cross state lines via internet or email, federal prosecutors may get involved.

Having the assistance of an experienced attorney in dealing with child pornography charges can be of great assistance in ensuring you receive the best defense possible.
