Former Penn State coach faces charges of child sexual abuse

Our Baton Rouge readers may already be aware of the recent allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. For those of our readers who haven't heard, Sandusky was arrested earlier this month and charged with 40 counts of child sexual abuse. Those charges reportedly stem from incidents that took place over a 15-year period with four boys.

Sandusky was arrested on November 5, and since his arrest, a number of alleged victims have come forward and accused the former coach of child sexual abuse, though the accusations and stories are still being worked out.

In the grand jury indictment against Sandusky, it was alleged that most of Sandusky's victims were beneficiaries of a children's charity he founded in 1977, by the name of The Second Mile. The Second mile is nonprofit established for underprivileged youth which provides assistance for at-risk children as well as support for their parents throughout Pennsylvania.

Last week, Sandusky gave a television interview in which he defended himself and declared his innocence of the charges. In the interview, which was given on NBC, he admitted to "horsing around" with the boys after workouts as well as hugging them and "touching their legs without intent of sexual contact." But he denied suggestions that he was a pedophile.

In addition to criminal charges, Sandusky may also be facing civil action by alleged victims.
