A 36-year-old Elmira woman was recently killed in a crash near Millerton, and the Texas man responsible for the accident has been charged with DUI. Sources said the man was driving a pickup truck when he struck the victim in her SUV. According to authorities, she died at the scene of the accident. The accident occurred on October 21.
State troopers charged the 32-year-old Perryton man with homicide by motor vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol, a crime known as “DUI homicide.” He was also charged with DUI, speeding, failure to drive on the right side of the road, careless driving, failure to drive in the proper lane, failure to wear a seat belt and reckless driving.
Police reports allege that the man had been driving his 2011 Dodge 2500 pickup north on Bailey Creek Road in Jackson Township just before 8 a.m., when his truck strayed to the east side of the road and caused him to lose control of the vehicle. After his pickup turned back onto the road, it crossed over the centerline and crashed into the SUV.
The Texas man was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. Last Thursday, he waived a preliminary hearing, and the case is now being sent to Tioga County Court for a November 21 arraignment, where he will be presented with the charges against him.
Sources didn’t indicate whether the man had any previous DUIs on his record or any criminal history at all, for that matter. Whatever the case, he is likely to face some serious consequences. In these types of situations, serious though they are, there is still the opportunity for a defendant to achieve favorable results for their case.
