Former LSU cornerback in rehab, not playing in 2012 season

Former LSU star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, a native of New Orleans, is reportedly in drug rehabilitation in Houston at former NBA star John Lucas' Treatment center, and will apparently be sitting out this season. According to LSU football coach Les Miles, Mathieu was permanently dismissed from the team for rules violations and behavioral issues.

Student privacy laws prevent LSU officials from detailing why Mathieu was dismissed, but stories have circulated that the decision was made because of multiple positive tests for illegal drugs. In particular, Mathieu allegedly tested positive for marijuana. That report, however, has not been confirmed.

Mathieu, nicknamed the "Honey Badger," was recognized as an All-American and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. While Mathieu's drug problems and rehabilitation are having a negative effect on his football career, the positive is that he is not facing any legal troubles.

Drug charges can lead to a number of negative consequences. In Louisiana, conviction on possession of marijuana can result in fines and/or jail time. Subsequently convictions become increasingly harsh.

Knowing how to fight drug charges isn't always easy. Without experienced representation, many defendants are unclear about how to best defend themselves and protect their rights. Having a strong advocate on one's side is a great asset in such cases. A good attorney will ensure that prosecutors are held to their full burden of proof and that the defendant doesn't miss any opportunities to steer their case in a favorable direction.
