Baton Rouge doctor charged with sex battery

In a case that has been turning heads, a doctor allegedly violated his medical ethics in the worst way by touching one of his female patient in an offensive manner. The doctor has been charged with sexual assault of the woman who told police she was afraid to stop the doctor's unwanted advances for fear he would not authorize a prescription she needed.

The doctor, who now faces counts of sexual battery and simple battery, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on July 12 and has since been released on bail. He at one point denied any sexual contact with his 24-year-old patient but later told investigators that the contact was consensual. He is accused of inappropriate conduct with the woman over the course of four visits. On one occasion, he complimented the woman's looks and hugged her. During another visit, he allegedly kissed the woman on the neck and touched her under her clothes.

While the accused physician has a history of prescribing controlled substances in excessive quantities and for extended periods of time, the alleged victim has her own history of having been arrested on drug charges a few years ago. In fact it was this background of apparent drug dependence that led the victim to the doctor's office in the first place. She had been referred to the accused's medical clinic by her social worker, who informed the young woman that the clinic could prescribe suboxone, a drug used to treat opiate addiction. The alleged victim later confided to this same social worker that she had been inappropriately touched by the doctor.

Adding to the aggravating circumstances is the allegation that the doctor contacted this same social worker, demanding an "assessment sheet" containing detailed information about her. According to the social worker, this was a first in more than 20 years of the social worker's association with the doctor.

As one might expect, the allegations have already had civil repercussions. The state Board of Medical Examiners has suspended the doctor's license. But it is in the forthcoming criminal arena that the doctor will need the services of a defense counsel with long experience with sex offences.
