According to recent reports, a federal investigation resulted in the largest seizure of methamphetamine ever conducted by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s deputies participated in serving the federal search warrants against nine men, who were later indicted by a federal grand jury.
During the searches, officers discovered 9 kg of methamphetamine, according to reports. The value of the drugs was estimated at $1 million. Additionally, authorities confiscated 8 lbs. of marijuana and a number of firearms, including an AR-15 assault rifle.
Numerous charges were made against the men, including possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and money laundering. They were allegedly part of an interstate conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana. Most of the men were from Baton Rouge, and their ages ranged from 20 to 45.
Serious consequences could result for a person accused of drug distribution, especially if the charges are levied at the federal level. For example, Prison and asset forfeiture are common sanction. However, an individual who is facing charges typically has the right to retain legal representation. A criminal defense attorney might be able to scrutinize the legality of the search warrants used against the person. Any violations of person’s Constitutional protection against unlawful searches and seizures might allow the attorney to suppress some or all of the evidence. Even if evidence stands, an attorney could negotiate for reduced charges or a more lenient sentence. If a plea bargain is offered by a prosecutor, the defendant could discuss it with an attorney to see if it is the best deal possible.
