LSU baseball player faces DUI and other charges

A DUI or DWI arrest in Louisiana can have serious consequences. If convicted, you could lose your driver's license, be forced to pay excessive fines and may, in certain circumstances, be sentenced to time behind bars. Sometimes, however, a person does not even need to be convicted to feel the negative effects of such an arrest. This is particularly true for college students who may face punishment from a university for a drunk driving incident.

Early Sunday morning, police arrested a 19-year-old man who was a freshman infielder/pitcher for the Louisiana State University baseball team. He was charged with a first-offense driving while intoxicated, as well as reckless operation of a vehicle and disobeying a red light. The man reportedly spent a few hours in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

After the arrest, the university's baseball coach dismissed him from the baseball team. This is a quite a blow, as the man had a promising future as a player. He was a three-time All-State selection and the 2010 Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year in his junior year. Early last year, he was on the cover of a regional edition of ESPN Rise magazine.

Anyone charged with DUI or DWI should contact an experienced criminal defense lawyer immediately. An attorney will carefully evaluate all aspects of the traffic stop and arrest. Did law enforcement officers follow protocol? Was the breath test administered properly? Was the breath test machine calibrated properly? A good attorney will answer these questions and more, seeking to minimize the impact of the charge on the accused's life.
