February off to a violent start in Baton Rouge

The first weekend of February was marked by a rash of violence. Two people were injured after a shooting at Am-Mart Seafood in Baton Rouge following an argument. In a separate shooting a 19-year-old was killed near a new apartment complex.

In another attack that weekend, the 15-year-old son of a Baton Rouge Metro Council member was shot in the chest. The boy was rushed to the hospital and suffered serious injuries. There is speculation that the shooting was related to a drug deal that may not have gone as planned.

Detectives later arrested a 16-year-old suspect in connection with the shooting of the council member's son. The suspect has been charged with several violent crimes, including first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery.

Another 15-year-old who was with the council member's son on the night he was shot is being held on one count of attempted possession of marijuana.

Increase in shootings has neighborhoods concerned

NBC news reports that already this year there have been 11 murders, an increase from eight that occurred during the same period in 2011.

Baton Rouge Council members and Mayor Melvin "Kip" Holden will address this growing problem. Neighbors in the affected areas express concern that it is not safe to walk outside after dark. The neighbors want something to be done soon.

Law enforcement will likely be stepping up patrols. Following the recent violence, it is important that the right offenders are found and prosecuted. However, if you have been charged with a violent crime, a Louisiana criminal defense attorney is vital to protect your rights.
