Our readers are probably aware of the recent divorce between Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller and their ensuing custody battle. In the midst of that fight, Sheen pointed to Mueller’s drug abuse problems in support of denying her custody of their two young sons. While the irony of that situation was apparent to all who looked on, Mueller’s struggles with drug abuse is well known.
The charges reportedly stem from allegations that Mueller assaulted a woman at a nightclub last December. Officers also arrested her on charges of drug possession. This Monday, she pleaded guilty to possessing 4 grams or less of cocaine, felony possession with intent to distribute, and misdemeanor assault.
Muller has had previous involvement with the law regarding drug abuse, though she does not have any drug convictions on her record. In March 2001, she was arrested for cocaine possession, though the charges were later dropped after no cocaine was found in her body
Mueller’s plea deal, according to sources, provides that all charges will be dropped if she complies with the 12 months of probation and other conditions. If she is found to be in violation of the terms of her probation, she will have a permanent conviction of possessing under 4 grams of cocaine.
The deferred judgment has come as a surprise to some, though attorneys in the case say it is a standard process, not a special deal for a celebrity. Such deals are routinely offered to those with little or no criminal history and those who have taken steps to correct their mistakes.
