Darrow man avoids conviction on rape charge stemming from hotel incident

Criminal defense isn't always a matter of denying any and all wrongdoing. In many cases, the goal is ensuring that the defendant is not convicted of crimes beyond those they admit to committing.

A Darrow man who had been suspected of rape and armed robbery was recently acquitted of the rape charge and found guilty only of simple robbery. He had also been charged with kidnapping, but the jury deadlocked on that charge. The charges reportedly stem from an incident in which-according to his defense attorney-the man met up with a prostitute.

The specifics about what took place during that incident are disputed. The woman claims that the two met at a New Orleans hotel, where the Darrow man pretended to be a cop arrested her, taped her with duct tape, orally raped her, cut her with a sharp object, stuffed her in a closet, and stole her valuable possessions.

Following the incident, the woman and an unidentified man called police about the incident. Prosecutors issued charges, arguing that he has engaged in similar behavior in the past.

According to the Darrow man's defense attorney, though, the incident was a sex-for-money transaction that was never completed, and that the woman fabricated details to cover up her prostitution. The attorney argues that the Darrow man wanted to play the role of a dominant police officer, and that he informed the prostitute of his fetish in advance. She also argues that the woman took his payment, but then refused to have sex with him or return the money.

The woman apparently denied selling sex for money or advertising on several sites for prostitution transactions, but there are apparently text messages in which she discusses sex for money.

Though the man faces a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment for the robbery charge, he avoided more serious charges.
