If you’ve been keeping up with news in the medical field, you might have heard about a case where a male nurse was accused of committing sexual battery on a male patient at a hospital where he worked. According to the news, the man’s alleged sex offenses went all the way to court, but his conviction was then overturned last month. Now, a Nov. 27 report claims that the man has pleaded guilty to a felony charge instead.
According to the news, this felony charge will be for aggravated second-degree battery, which is a violent crime and felony, but won’t require the man to register as a sex offender. The 49-year-old male nurse will allegedly be in prison for 10 years at hard labor, and then he will be faced with two years of supervised probation, according to the ruling from the judge. However, the judge has now suspended eight years and 11 months of the sentence, taking it down to just one year and one month.
This trouble all started for the male nurse when the patient at Rapides Regional Medical Center accused him of sexual assault in 2009. He claimed that the nurse performed the sexual assault while he was under anesthesia and while the nurse was taking care of him after an appendectomy.
It is difficult to say what happened in this case, but male nurses do tend to have it rough in hospitals. They often have to help male patients use the bathroom, and if the patients can’t get up, this may require appropriate, medically-necessary touching.
