Judges sets date for Suge Knight trial

Louisiana music fans may be interested to know that on April 30, a judge in Los Angeles set the date for the trial of Marion 'Suge" Knight, the founder of Death Row Records. The rap industry mogul has been accused of hitting two men in the parking lot of a Compton burger stand. One of the men suffered severe injuries, and the other died.

During his hearing on April 30, Knight pleaded not-guilty on all charges, and his attorney claimed that the man injured in the accident did not conclusively identify him as the person who ran him over. The injured man gave an account to the local police, but he did not say directly that Knight ran him over. He also said that he had started an altercation with Knight. A surveillance video allegedly shows Knight's truck hitting the man twice before striking another person, who died as a result of the injuries sustained.

During the trial, Knight will face murder, hit-and-run and attempted murder charges for the January accident. His bail has been set at $10 million. The judge set the trial for July 7, but the date could change with a motion to move it further Jurors have been chosen through a careful prescreening process.

Murder charges can be difficult to refute when there is evidence, such as surveillance video, showing a defendant played a role in causing an incident. A defense side may be able to argue for reduced charges, such as involuntary manslaughter, if evidence shows that the person's negligence led to an accident. A criminal law attorney might be able to assist clients who are accused of violent crimes, such as murder, to develop a defense.
