Louisiana woman sentenced following $50 million fraud scheme

There are many different legal penalties that individuals who are convicted of white collar crime may face, but most convictions result in at least some time in prison and monetary penalties as well. It is these monetary penalties that are perhaps the most significant when it comes to white collar crimes because the amount of money involved with many such crimes is often staggering. As the consequences of a crime are usually relative to its severity, the financial penalty is often staggering as well.

Recently in New Orleans, a woman received her sentence after being convicted of a fraud scheme that cost Medicare more than $50 million. According to reports, the woman was the office manager of Memorial Home Health Inc., a home health company in Louisiana, and she was heavily involved in submitting false claims to Medicare since 2007. The scheme submitted claims worth at least $56 million, nearly $51 million of which was paid by Medicare.

As a result of the part she played in the scheme, the woman has been sentenced to four years in prison, and she will have to pay more than $14 million in restitution. It is hard to tell which aspect of the sentencing is more frightening, but that many millions of dollars can be extremely hard to produce, and the loss of such a large amount of money can be even harder to recover from.

Because the legal penalties of a conviction are so severe, it is highly recommended that individuals who are facing white collar crime accusations consult with an attorney. A criminal defense attorney can help you prove your innocence when accused of a white collar crime, or can at least help you take the best course of action to receive a relatively lighter sentence.
