There are primarily two different classifications of criminal activity: misdemeanors and felonies. Both types of crimes are extremely serious, and they can both leave lasting impressions on your social status, job prospects and more, but felonies are undoubtedly the more serious of the two. This is because the penalties for a felony are often significantly greater than the penalties for a misdemeanor, with fines and jail time often being extremely high.
A recent case in Louisiana has demonstrated another way in which felony crimes carry significant legal consequences in the form of bond. Acting on a search warrant, police recently investigated two apartments and took three individuals into custody for drug crimes. All three individuals are facing the same charges: possession of controlled substance, a class C felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor. The controlled substance in question is methamphetamine.
Because these individuals are facing multiple charges, their legal penalties will likely be even greater than those of someone who is only facing one charge, but the alarming thing to note is that bond for each person was set at $10,000, cash only. Even if they were only facing the felony charges, these individuals would still likely be facing thousands of dollars in bonds, and of course the penalties of a conviction will be even more severe, both financially and in terms of jail time.
The good news for these individuals is that they are still considered innocent unless they are convicted. This is true for everyone accused of a drug crime, or any crime for that matter.
