While in college, you and many other students in Louisiana undoubtedly want to obtain a quality education and also have a good time. After all, college is the first time many young people are away from their parents and can truly make their own decisions in certain situations. As a result, you may understandably want to make the most of this time in your life.

However, it also pays to remain safe and responsible during this time. While that does not mean that you have to spend every night in your dorm room studying, it does mean that you should recognize the risks and possible consequences of going out and acting irresponsibly.

Safety is a top priority

You may have reached the age at which going to clubs and bars is no longer a restricted activity. As a result, you may want to go out with your friends and have fun. While a reasonable desire, you may want to remember the following tips for staying safe while you are out:

  • Go in a group: Going out to a club or bar alone can quickly become a dangerous situation. Though you may consider yourself social and not mind meeting new people, not everyone has the best intentions, and being alone could make you a target.
  • Watch your belongings: Clubs and bars can easily become crowded, and if you carry a large bag or bring unnecessary items with you, someone could easily steal your belongings.
  • Have a plan: If you are 21 or older and intend to drink, you need to have a plan for getting home safely. You and your friends may have a designated driver or appoint a person to call for a ride when needed.
  • Avoid drugs: Drug activity is not uncommon at clubs, and someone may try to sell or give you a substance. In many cases, the substance may not be what the seller claims, which could either lead to no effect or significantly harmful effects.
  • Get out of danger: If you feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable in a situation or with a person, try to leave as safely as possible. Listening to your intuition could help you in these scenarios.

While you should certainly allow yourself to have a good time responsibly, remember that your safety should always come first.

Other possible negative outcomes

Even if you face no problems at the club, your night could be far from over if a police officer stops your vehicle and believes that you are driving while intoxicated. If this happens, you could end up charged with DWI. However, you do not have to resign yourself to a negative outcome. A defense attorney could help you work toward the best outcomes for your case.
