Being charged with multiple crimes can enhance the severity of the charges and potential penalties. For example, charges for possessing an illegal firearm and committing murder can lead to more serious penalties than a charge for only one of those offenses. In these situations, it is important to challenge evidence of the principal criminal charge, as well as any aggravating factors.

Last week, a 22-year-old man was shot with an assault rifle at Sweet Briar Mobile Home Park in Zachary. According to East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies, the victim and two other people were at the trailer park. At one point, a man who was involved in an ongoing dispute with the three men allegedly opened fire on them with a .223 assault rifle while riding in a car driven by his brother.

Only one of the men was struck in the reported attack. He was transported to Lane Regional Medical Center, where he died from his wounds.

Authorities report that they have arrested the man they believe to be the shooter, a 25-year-old Zachary man, and his brother, a 27-year-old from Baton Rouge. The alleged shooter has been charged with one count of first degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. His brother has been booked on one count of principal to first-degree murder, two counts of principal to attempted first-degree murder and two outstanding traffic warrants.

Anyone charged with murder knows the stakes are high. In this situation, it is critical to consult with a defense lawyer who will examine all angles of the charge and build a solid defense based on the evidence.
