A rookie player on the Pittsburgh Steelers football team has been arrested for participating in a high-speed chase during an alleged DUI incident. The man, age 22, was reportedly intoxicated when he crashed into a line of parked cars, injuring a woman.

Reports from the scene indicate that the young man was driving his SUV down the wrong side of the road on a Pittsburgh South Side thoroughfare. He allegedly tried to flee the scene after hitting four parked cars and injuring a woman, but officers succeeded in restraining him.

Legal documents indicate that an off-duty police officer had contacted the department about the SUV driver, who had been running his vehicle across double yellow lines and passing multiple vehicles at once. He was also allegedly driving recklessly in areas with a high volume of pedestrians. The man was apprehended after the high-speed chase, when his vehicle was disabled. He fled on foot, reportedly removing his shirt in an attempt to lose officers in the pursuit.

Information from the criminal complaint shows that the man’s blood alcohol content was about 0.2 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit in the state. It is not clear whether a breathalyzer was conducted at the scene or if a blood test was completed at the police station.

Local media reports have not said whether this incident was the man’s first DUI-related event. If so, he may choose to plead guilty to obtain a reduced sentence and may not be required to serve jail time, depending on the plea agreement that is created by attorneys. Considering the significant amount of evidence compiled against the player, a guilty plea could reduce the seriousness of the punishment and allow him to get back on the field sooner.
