Two Lafayette students accused of sexually assaulting fellow student

Following a suspected rape of a female student at N.P. Moss Preparatory last week in Lafayette, both the school system and the Police Department have made changes to procedures at the school. A police officer trained as a school resource officer is now assigned to the school, and two police officers have been providing support to the campus since November.

Two Moss Prep students were arrested last week in the rape of a female student inside the Domingue Recreation Center. A school employee reportedly walked in on the incident on January 9 and reported the incident to the campus resources officer. Following the incident, a 16-year-old student was arrested on one count of aggravated rape and a 13-year-old student was booked on one count of principal to rape. The alleged victim’s age has not been released.

Moss Prep hosts the district’s alternative program for students removed from their home schools because of discipline issues. Now, the campus may be gaining two “safety officers,” who would be different from school resource officers, who are trained police officers who carry weapons and make arrests on school campuses.

Violence on school campuses is something that concerns everybody, both with respect to the alleged victim and the accused. When accusations like rape are leveled against young people, their lives can take a turn for the worse. For a young person, having a strong advocate is critical in helping to navigate legal troubles and get back on the right track toward a successful future.
