On Thursday, country singing legend Randy Travis pleaded guilty to a driving while intoxicated charge connected to an incident last summer when Travis was found naked after crashing his car in Sherman. In exchange for his guilty plea, Travis received two years of probation, a $2,000 fine and a 180-day suspended jail sentence. If he fails to complete probation successfully, he will face jail time.

As part of his probation, Travis was ordered to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility, complete 100 hours of community service and to have an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he operates during probation. The plea deal was a break for Travis, who could have been punished with as much as one year in jail and a $4,000 fine for the misdemeanor. Prosecutors dropped a charge of retaliation for threats he made against police officers as part of the plea deal.

The incident, which occurred last August 7, occurred when Travis’ car veered off a road and struck several barricades in a construction zone. Police reportedly found Travis lying in the roadway naked. He was reportedly belligerent while he was being transported to a hospital for care, where a blood test was taken. According to authorities, Travis’ blood alcohol level was .21, over twice the legal limit. Travis, a first-time DWI defendant, reportedly spent 30 days in a treatment facility

First-time charges of DWI can be intimidating for those unfamiliar with the criminal justice system. Having an experienced advocate not only helps guide one through the process, but also increases the chance of achieving a favorable outcome.
