Prescription drug abuse a growing national problem among teens

According to a new survey conducted by The Partnership at Drugfree.org, as well as MetLife Foundation, prescription drug abuse among teens is a growing national problem. Since 2008, the number of high school students abusing prescription drugs has risen from 33 percent, with 13 percent of teens acknowledging having experimented at least once with either Ritalin or Adderall that was not prescribed to them.

Improper police procedure can affect integrity of criminal case

A 26-year-old Baton Rouge man was recently arrested on accusations that he owned videos containing child pornography. The State Attorney General's Office said on Friday that the man had been arrested on counts of pornography involving juveniles and unauthorized use of wireless technology to download pornography involving juveniles.

Baton Rouge man pleads guilty to child porn charge

A 30-year-old Baton Rouge man was sentenced on Wednesday to eight years in federal prison following a guilty plea in a case involving allegations that he distributed child pornography. Prosecutors accused the man of distributing 25 images of child pornography to an undercover special agent with the FBI over the Internet.

Study: gang members involved in large percentage of homicides between 2010 and 2012

According to a new study conducted by researchers with Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination (BRAVE), a program aiming to eliminate community violence, a large percentage of homicides in East Baton Rouge between September 2010 and October 2012 involved "known gang members" or gang-related violence.

Legal system provides important protections for those accused of sexual assault

A recent editorial in The Advocate focused on sexual trauma and mentioned the recent sexual assault case out in Steubenville, Ohio as a reminder of the need to educate the community about sexual trauma and to work for its prevention. Some very good points were made in the editorial.
