The area of North Sherwood Forest Boulevard has proved fatal ground for two Baton Rouge men recently. The old saying, “lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place,” was certainly proven wrong in two recent Baton Rouge tragedies where the specter of murder visited twice in just hours — and only city blocks apart.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred near North Sherwood Forest Boulevard, where, after neighbors heard gunshots, they frantically pounded 911 on their phones. The police responded quickly and discovered a teenager shot fatally in the lower back. He was prone in the street, according to police reports.
The victim was a 16-year-old, who lived nearby and was reportedly making his way home when he was gunned down — motive unknown at this point. After the serious bullet wound, the victim was able to stagger about 30 yards on nearby Vickers Drive, before he collapsed and died.
Ironically, just 12 hours before, police found a man also dead of gunshots just a few blocks away.
This first neighborhood victim was also a young man — 25-years-old — and was discovered under similar circumstances just six blocks from where the 16-year-old was shot dead. According to police, he also lived nearby in the community and was walking when gunned down, although initial reports had him behind the wheel of a car.
The two recent killings so far have no leads, no suspects and no thus-far connection between the victims. However, the killings have spawned a deluge of blogging about making narcotic drugs legally available and affordable, to flooding the streets with cops, to the politically incorrect notion of some kind of social predisposition of blacks to commit crimes — both victims were black.
Whatever the inevitable caustic discussions in the blogs, the cops will most likely ferret out the alleged perpetrator/s and the justice system will take over — with skilled defense counsels on the side of the accused and equally dedicated prosecutors on the other, both committed to seek out and find the truth.
