DUI deaths drop in Louisiana

Those in Baton Rouge will be glad to hear that the number of deaths associated with drunk driving have been dropping. According to a new state report, the number of fatal crashes due to or involving drunk driving is decreasing, which is good for all drivers.

In the 2013 report, Louisiana had been ranked as a problem state with some of the worst drunk-driving problems in the nation. However, the year 2014 sees Louisiana moving into a mid-range category along with most other states. In 2013, the report states that Louisiana had approximately 0.63 DWI-related fatalities for every 100 million miles that were driven. This number has now allegedly dropped to 0.53, according to the state report.

The report goes on to state that an alleged 40 percent of all traffic fatalities are alcohol related, and East Baton Rouge was noted as one of the major problem areas during that year. According to the report, the 16 parishes allegedly accounted for 70.3 percent of the total licensed population and 75.3 percent of injuries or fatalities of any kind. When considering the number of accidents related to alcohol, East Baton Rouge jumps to the top of the list, according to this state report.

Information on the number of fatalities and drivers is collected for five years, according to the deputy director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

While deaths have been dropping, a drunk-driving conviction in Louisiana can leave you looking at three to five years in jail if a person was killed in the accident. Injuries can also lead to lawsuits that could damage your reputation and good name. With a proper defense, the charges against you may be dropped or lowered. If you're facing DUI charges, be sure to understand all your legal rights.
