Did drinking on campus land you in jail?

What would happen if your college professor gave you an assignment to write an essay about the social, emotional and academic challenges you have faced since your first semester in college? You’d likely have no shortage of content. If your college experience has been similar to average students’ situations throughout the nation, you could probably fill three to five (if not more) pages on each of the categories just mentioned.

If your campus life sometimes (or often) includes drinking alcohol, you might be able to do an entire essay on that topic alone. No matter what your particular reasons might be, college situations that involve alcohol often lead to legal problems for one or more people. If you go to a party but later wind up in jail, it’s important to know where to seek legal guidance with the goal of protecting your future.

Do You Drink For These Reasons?

As is the case with many non-student adults in Louisiana, drinking alcohol can become a habit that has many negative consequences, including those affecting your physical health, your personal and professional lives, and even your freedom. Here are some of the top-cited reasons college students give for imbibing in alcohol:

  • If you feel nervous when you enter unfamiliar social situations, you may be one of the many college students who say having a few drinks helps you loosen up and gives you confidence to interact with other people.
  • College life can be quite stressful, no doubt. Many students say they use alcohol as a stress reliever.
  • People in and out of college often say they enjoy the atmosphere of having some drinks around a campfire, at a pub or some other social event. They say it’s fun to kick back and relax, chat with friends and enjoy a festive environment.
  • There are also college students who say they don’t really enjoy drinking all that much but feel as if they have to do it to fit in with the crowd.
  • Some people use alcohol to try to forget their troubles, even though this means of distraction often causes additional problems rather than help alleviate ones that already exist.

If you go out with friends on or off campus, have a drink or two, then drive back to your dorm or apartment, you are not necessarily doing anything wrong. It all depends on your age and the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream when you get behind the wheel to drive.

If You Get Pulled Over For Drunk Driving In Louisiana

Facing drunk driving charges in Louisiana can surely put a damper on your college career; a conviction could also have collateral consequences like heavy fines, probation, community service, loss of financial aid, expulsion from school, and difficulty finding employment. Just the thought of calling home to tell your family you are in jail may be enough to make your stress level soar. If this happens to you (especially if it’s the first time you’ve ever faced charges), there are people who can step in to help you try to avoid a conviction and get your life back on track as soon as possible.
